Understanding Potencies in Homeopathy: Decimal, Centesimal & Potentisation Explained
Learn about different potencies in homeopathy, the difference between
decimal and centesimal scales, and the process of potentisation.
Introduction
One of the most unique aspects of homeopathy is the concept of potency. When browsing
remedies, you’ll often see numbers and letters like 6X, 30C, or 200C. But what do they mean?
And how are these remedies prepared? Let’s break it down step by step.
1. Different Potencies in Homeopathy
In homeopathy, the word potency refers to the level of preparation or dilution of a remedy.
• Lower potencies (like 6X, 12C, 30C): Often used for general wellness support or by
beginners.
• Higher potencies (like 200C, 1M, 10M): Traditionally used under the guidance of an
experienced practitioner.
• The number indicates how many times the original substance has been diluted and
prepared through a process called potentisation (explained below).
In short: the potency number shows the depth of preparation, not the strength in a
conventional sense.
2. Decimal vs Centesimal Scales: What’s the Difference?
There are different systems of dilution in homeopathy. The two most common are:
Decimal Scale (marked with X or D)
• Each step is a 1:10 dilution (one part substance to nine parts diluent).
• Example: 6X means the dilution and preparation was repeated six times using this 1:10
ratio.
Centesimal Scale (marked with C)
• Each step is a 1:100 dilution (one part substance to ninety-nine parts diluent).
• Example: 30C means the dilution and preparation was repeated thirty times using this
1:100 ratio.
Key difference:
• Decimal (X or D): smaller step dilution, considered “lower potency.”
• Centesimal (C): larger step dilution, can reach very high potencies like 200C, 1M.
3. What is Potentisation?
Potentisation is the process of preparing a homeopathic remedy through repeated dilution and
vigorous shaking (known as succussion).
• Step 1: The original substance (plant, mineral, etc.) is mixed with alcohol or lactose.
• Step 2: It is diluted in a defined ratio (decimal or centesimal).
• Step 3: The mixture is succussed (shaken firmly in a specific way).
• Step 4: This process is repeated multiple times until the desired potency is reached.
The idea is that while the material quantity of the original substance becomes very small, the
energetic or dynamic qualities are believed to be enhanced through this preparation.
